Brandl was the most important Baroque artist in Bohemia. Czech equivalent of Rembrandt. At the age of 15, he began an apprenticeship with the head of the Prague Castle gallery. Thanks to this, he was able to study the exhibited painting of the old masters. His customers were monasteries and wealthy nobility. One of the most valuable sculptures by Matyas Bernard Braun on the Charles Bridge, the sculptures of St. Liugard, was based on a painting by Petr Brandl. His best works can be found in the church of St. Kliment in Klementinum or in the church of St. Marketa in the Brevnov monastery. Although he was the highest paid artist of his time, he spent more than he earned. He lived in debt and even found himself in prison several times. Attempting to get rich quickly , he got involved in a gold mining business in Jilove u Prahy. At that time, however, the mine was already mined by the Prague archbishopric. He owed money to miners and was being sued by his wife for child support. Brandl was not about to give up the high life.
